All About the Letter D Independent Practice - Letter of the Week

The All About the Letter Dd Independent Practice Packet is the perfect accompaniment to the All About the Letter Dd SMARTBoard Activity. I have used a variety of the activities in both whole and small group instruction.



All About the Letter Dd Independent Practice contains the following:
  • Where is the Letter Dd? Find the upper and lowercase letter Dd out of a random group of letters. Then count how many uppercase and lowercase Dd’s and write the number at the bottom of the paper.
  • Where is the Letter Dd? Find the upper and lowercase letter Dd in the nursery rhyme, Diddle Diddle Dumpling. Then count how many uppercase and lowercase Dd’s and write the number at the bottom of the paper. Finally, practice writing the letter D.
  • Dd is for Dinosaur Help Danny Dino find his doughnut. Follow the upper and lowercase D’s to the doughnut.
  • Find, Graph, & Tally Count the number of objects and color in the matching number of squares.
  • Write. Find.  Practice writing the letter D. Find the picture that does not belong. Find the letter D out of a group of letters.
  • Big D, little d What Begins With D?  Draw a picture that begins with the letter Dd. Practice writing the letter Dd.
  • Letter Dd Vocabulary Cards: drum, duck, doll, dishes, dime, dice, dinosaur, detective, desk, dog, door, and donut.
  • Write the Room
  • Which One Does Not Belong? Put an D on the pictures that do not begin with the Letter D. Put an X on the letter that does not belong.
  • Which One Comes Next?  Write the letter that comes next in the pattern. Use the pictures at the bottom of the page to finish the pattern.
  • Sort Uppercase and Lowercase Letter Dd  Use the ducks printed with the letters Aa, Bb, Cc, Dd, Ee, Sort the upper and lowercase letter Dd ducks onto the matching ponds.
  • Letter Dd Sorting Mat  Use the pictures and sort by beginning letter D sound onto the mat.

Directions: Print Letter D Vocabulary Cards, Sort Uppercase and Lowercase Letter D, and Letter Dd Sorting Mat on cardstock and laminate for durability.

All About the Letter D - Letter of the Week SMARTBoard Activities

There are over 20 pages of interactive activities to promote and reinforce letter, critical thinking, and math concepts. All About the Letter D is perfect for whole group, small group, and individual practice on the SMARTBoard or on a computer with the SMARTNotebook software installed.



All About the Letter Dd file contains the following activities:
  • Letter D Vocabulary Words
  • Where is the letter D? Circle the upper and lowercase letter out of a random group of letters. Then count and write how many uppercase and lowercase D’s you found.
  • Where is the letter D? Circle the upper and lowercase letter D’s from the nursery rhyme, “Diddle, Diddle Dumpling.” Then count and write how many uppercase and lowercase D’s you found.
  • Direct teacher-led instruction on how to write the uppercase letter D.
  • Let’s write the letter D. Individual practice for students.
  • Write the missing letter. Students write the missing letter of words beginning with the letter D.
  • Help Danny Dino find the doughnut. Draw a line from Danny Dino to the doughnut following the path of upper and lowercase letter D’s.
  • What comes next? Drag the picture and or letter which come next in the pattern.
  • What does not belong? Put a D on the letter and or picture that does not belong.
  • Sort uppercase and lowercase letter D. Upper and lowercase letters are printed on ducks. Drag ducks with the upper and lowercase letter D into the pond.
  • Sort beginning letter /d/ sound. Drag the pictures that begin with the /d/ sound behind the door.
  • Find, Graph, and Tally. Find the letters, count the letters, and color in the correct number of squares. Then practice using tally marks to count the letters. Then determine which letter had the most and which had the least.

  • Let’s Play a Game. Directions: Drag the dominoes from the "Bone Pile" and make a match. Take turns until all of the dominoes have been used. If a student does not draw a match place the domino, into the discard pile. The player loses a turn and it is the next player's turn. To rotate the domino, use the green circle on the picture when clicked.
  • Word Puzzles. Drag the puzzle pieces around to make words that begin with the letter D.
  • Let’s Build the Letter. Construct the upper and lowercase letter D out of straight and curvy lines.

Directions: It is recommended NOT to save the file once you have downloaded and extracted. This way the game does not have to be re-set.

Songs and Poems


Dinosaurs Poem

Dinosaurs Dinosaurs lived long ago.
They were so big and strong, you know!
Sharp teeth and claws, long tails too.
Some that walked and some that flew.
Though they don't live here anymore,
We still adore the dinosaur!


Diddle Diddle Dumpling
Diddle diddle dumpling, my son John
Diddle diddle dumpling, my son John.
One shoe off and one shoe on,
Went to bed with his stockings on.

Doggy, Doggy Who Has Your Bone?
Doggy, Doggy, where's your bone?
Somebody stole it from your home.
Guess who!  Maybe you...
Maybe the monkeys from the zoo.
Wake up doggy, find your bone.

How to play:
Choose a child to go first to be the doggy.  They should sit in the center of the circle of kids and close/cover their eyes while the song is chanted.  Have an adult give the bone  to one of the children while chanting the song.  Have all of the children hide their hands behind their backs.  When the chant is over, the doggy can uncover his or her eyes and gets 3 guesses as to which person has the bone.  Whether the doggy gets it right or not, the person with the bone gets to be the next doggy.

Letter Hunt: Go on a Letter Dd hunt around your home. Encourage your child to see how many objects he can find with names beginning with the /d/ sound like in dog. Support your child’s writing process by encouraging him/her to write the word on an index card. Then have him/her tape it to the object.

Odd Sound Out: Say three words, two beginning with the /d/ sound like in donut and one sound that is different. Have the student repeat which sound does not belong.

/d/ Listening Game: Read the following sentences. Have the students repeat the words that begin with the /d/ sound like in duck.
  • Donald duck dances all day.
  • Daisy plays the drum.
  • I have a doll named Dana.
  • I like dogs better than cats.
  • I need a dollar and a dime to buy a doughnut.

Fill in the Missing Word:  All of your guesses should begin with the /d/ sound like in Dana.
  •  It’s round and sweet with a hole in the middle. It is a __________. (doughnut)
  • It has four legs, a long tail, it likes to chase balls, and barks. It is a ______. (dog)
  • I have two webbed feet. A bill and I waddle when I walk. I quack when I say hello. I am a _______. (duck)
  • Four quarters or ten dimes make up one ________. (dollar)

Circle and Find: Have students practice reading environmental print. Use newspapers, junk mail, and/or sales flyers and have them highlight all of the letter Dd’s using a highlighter.

Dotted D’s: Trace an upper and lowercase letter D on a sheet of paper. Have your child use bingo markers and outline the letter D with dots.
